My garbage disposal won’t run after it was jammed. Do I need a new one?

That is up to you to decide, but it is not really necessary for you to shop for new garbage disposal, especially when you are in a tight budget. The usual cause of jammed garbage disposal is a foreign object blocking off blades from moving to crush garbage. You will first need to check whether anything is blocking your blades and remove it when you see something. My garbage disposal broke down, what now?

What can I put in my garbage disposal?

Unfortunately, we cannot dispose of anything in our garbage disposal. This is one of the reasons why our garbage disposal doesn’t last that very long in our house. Here are some tips that will help you keep using your garbage disposal for a long time:

Use hot and cold water to wash away food and dissolve grease that causes the blades to stop working.
Refrain from disposing meat, fruits, veggies, and eggshells onto your garbage disposals. They usually cause the blades to jam, because these types of foods are really hard to break down.
Please do not feed your disposals really hard solid objects (eg. silverware, glass, plastic). These are the materials that are usually found inside broken down disposals.
What can I do about foul odors coming from my garbage disposal?
The odors that come from your disposal are usually from the food that we feed our disposals. The best way to get rid of these unwanted odors is to feed the disposal with orange and lemon peels or ice cubes and turn your disposal on for 30 seconds. While your disposal is running, pour some liquid detergent onto it, rinse it with cold water, and run it again for another 30 seconds.

If you want are a bit more organic, then feed your garbage disposal with vinegar and baking soda as a replacement for water and liquid detergent.
